British Columbia is really two painting markets in one province. The southwest coast, from Vancouver and Surrey to Victoria and Saanich, has mild, wet winters, dense strata housing and a long but rain-broken exterior season. The Interior and the North, around Kelowna and beyond, have colder winters and a shorter window. A marketing plan that works in Burnaby can waste money in the Okanagan, and the reverse.
The BC market and its buyers
Answer first: expect three main buyer groups: detached-home owners, strata councils and managers, and builders or renovators.
The province's largest communities, Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Kelowna and Saanich, mix older detached houses with large numbers of condos and townhouses. For a painter that means:
- Detached homes: exterior repaints of wood siding and trim, often on older houses where prep is the selling point.
- Strata buildings: interior corridors, parkades and full exterior repaints, decided by councils on a planning cycle.
- Renovation-heavy neighbourhoods: interiors tied to sales, renovations and rental turnovers.
For strata work, the provincial rule that corporations with five or more lots need a depreciation report every five years matters to your marketing timeline, because exterior components are reviewed in it. Our strata and property-manager guide explains how to use that timing.
Seasons and weather
Answer first: on the coast, rain shapes the calendar more than cold; inland, cold shortens it.
Climate varies widely across BC. Coastal homeowners know that a dry week isn't promised, so they value painters who explain how they handle moisture, drying times and rain delays. Put that on your exterior page. In the Interior and the North, the exterior window is shorter and homeowners need to book earlier, so pre-selling in late winter matters more.
A practical split:
- Coast: exterior campaigns from late winter into summer, interior and strata common-area campaigns through the wet season
- Interior and North: a compressed exterior push in spring, early-booking offers in winter, strong interior marketing from autumn
The exterior season calendar gives the month-by-month version.
Regulators and bodies to know
Answer first: these are the bodies a BC painting company's customers and buyers may ask about. We link them; we don't give compliance advice.
- WorkSafeBC: workers' compensation and workplace safety. Strata and commercial buyers commonly ask for a clearance letter. WorkSafeBC's lead page notes that lead is still found in many older homes, which matters when you market work on older housing.
- SkilledTradesBC: apprenticeship and certification. Painter and Decorator is a Red Seal trade designated in BC.
- Consumer Protection BC: consumer protection matters, relevant if you sell to homeowners at their door.
- BC Registries and Online Services: business names and registration, worth checking before you name a new brand.
Programs: what not to promise
Answer first: we found no BC program that rebates painting, so don't advertise one.
As of October 2026, the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program is aimed at income-qualified households and pays toward heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and envelope work; its rules changed for invoices dated from 6 July 2026. Paint is not part of it. If a customer is replacing windows or adding insulation under a program, there may be follow-on interior painting, but your ads should say nothing that suggests paint qualifies. Confirm current details with the program administrator.
How we'd approach marketing in BC
Answer first: split the plan by sub-region, and lean on strata where crews allow.
- Separate coastal and Interior campaigns, with different dates and messages.
- Neighbourhood pages for the coastal suburbs and Interior towns you actually serve, each with real local detail.
- Rain-ready messaging on the coast: scheduling, drying, warranty.
- Strata positioning for companies with two or more crews, starting with townhouse complexes and low-rise buildings.
- Older-home prep pages that explain how you handle older surfaces, written from what your company actually does.
We are headquartered in Vancouver, so BC is home ground. As always, we are a marketing and consulting service, not a painting contractor. See local search, strata and commercial marketing, or the areas overview.
Frequently asked questions
When is exterior painting season on the BC coast?
Longer than in most of Canada, but interrupted by rain. Coastal painters often market spring and summer exteriors with clear rain-day policies, and push interiors through the wet months.
Is strata work worth pursuing in Metro Vancouver?
For companies with the crew size to deliver it, yes. Strata corporations with five or more lots follow a five-year depreciation report cycle, which puts exterior work into planning documents early.
Can I advertise rebates for painting in BC?
Not that we have found. CleanBC Better Homes programs cover heat pumps and envelope upgrades, not paint. Don't imply a rebate that doesn't exist.
